FIGHTING IRISH UNITE
What an exciting time to be Irishman, to be at La Cate, and to see the progress made by our football program this year! As of Tuesday, November 18, 2008 we are on our way to play a quarter final playoff game with Addison Christian (near Dallas).
Perhaps it is time to be great again?
When we hired Rudy Forti, Jr. as the head football coach, I just wanted to make sure we began a season with a caring coach who taught our young men an athletic skill, team work, and personal sportsmanship. Using his leadership ability Coach Forti has put together a coaching staff and varsity squad that has moved the Fighting Irish into the PLAYOFFS!
Coach Forti, Jr. played football while in college at the University of North Texas in Denton, continuing his Masters degree and coaching as a graduate assistant. He brought his skills back home to Cathedral and began rebuilding a program that I am proud to say has been a success.
Chase Calvillo scored two touchdowns to break the 7-7 halftime tie against Antonian High School of San Antonio in a playoff game last Friday. Juan Raudales finished the game with 7 seconds by snagging an interception in the end zone. John Lee Quiett led the field of Irish men. But, it took the entire team. “The score doesn’t indicate that, but we ran all over them and we didn’t give up”, cheered on an enthusiastic Coach Forti, Jr. Final score: Cathedral 21 Antonian 14. The Irish go into Addison with an 8-3 record.
The biggest improvement for Cathedral football is not just more wins; it is building a team. I am proud of our coaching staff and the way they have created a team of young men who find the best within themselves. GO IRISH!
